On This Day: Mega-Merger, Superman, 3-Fitty Club

By Dive'r Down Dave

On this day (May 10th), in 1969 ....
  • a gallon of gas cost 33 cents
  • a loaf of bread cost 25 cents
  • and the plans for the NFL-AFL merger are completed. The NFL would now consist of two conferences of 13 teams each, the AFC and NFC. The NFL agrees to move three franchises, Baltimore, Cleveland and Pittsburgh, to the AFC.

On this day, in 1970 ....

  • a gallon of gas cost 36 cents
  • a head of lettuce cost 29 cents
  • and Bobby Orr's goal gave Boston its first Stanley Cup in 29 years. The Bruins beat the St.Louis Blues in overtime, to complete the four-game sweep.

And on this day, in 2008 ....

  • a gallon of gas cost $3.05
  • cheating on Christie Brinkley cost a fortune
  • and Greg Maddux of the San Diego Padres became the ninth pitcher in major league history to win 350 games, allowing only one unearned run over six innings, in a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies.

1 comment:

  1. So who is greater, Bobby Orr to hockey players or Greg Maddux to pitchers.

Obviously, Orr tops all defencemen and as such is a far greater credit to his position. And Maddux is no Babe Ruth, so he is only competitive in this comparison when taken versus his fellow pitchers.

But compared to all pitchers in history, how does he rate versus Orr, when compared to every hockey player in history?
