  3. Yikes if Quick doesn't settle down and focus it could be a short series. San Jose did an excellent job in getting him off his game (it seems Quick's one major flaw is that he has a fairly short temper which really takes away his concentration/focus). Talk about a hit-fest, though. Hopefully this goes 7

  8. Was there anyone (other than those living in vans down by the river without cable) who would have prognosticated Quick having both the worst save percentage (.824 - ok, actually he's second worst behind Bryzgalov .822) and GAA (7.20 - other goaltenders aren't even in this same ballpark as this incredible achievement) prior to the start of the play-offs? Folks, hell has apparently frozen over.

  23. That was a heckuva game tonight. I didn't see the 2nd OT (or much of the 1st), but apparently Subban atoned for his horrible positioning where he screened Price on the Boychuk goal.

  42. Well that's just great. Not only does Barrymore have a decent-sized lead in the standings, but he also has the most players remaining?

    Fantastic.

The rest of us best be making some sweet waiver claims. Last round, I claimed Seabrook 1st-overall, and he went on to score 5 assists in 6 games. Moved me right outta the basement.

    1. rub it in, ya bastid! Seabrook was also my first choice in the last waiver claim process... alas, such is the cruelty, and even despair :( of intense play-off pool competition.....and yes, Barrymore, barring any sort of miracle/spite from the Hockey Gods, is sure looking like a lock for the grand title of Hockey Poobah

    2. Maybe Bryan Bickell will do for you, what Seabrook did for me - move you all the way up to 5th-place!

    2. I have a cool picture of Galchenyuk (and Yakupov and Malcolm Subban), at age 18 .... I'll look for it and post it in the BatterUp League.

    1. I do NOT want this series to end. Phenomenal hockey! I hate to say it, but I think this is the Stanley Cup Final :)

    2. They need to rework the playoff format all over again, so that any two teams can meet in the finals. It's not like the days when you had to take a train from Yukon to Ottawa to play a series. Now, you play a game that ends just before 10 PM, you're on a private jet by midnight. Whether that flight takes one hour to go from Montreal to Toronto, or six hours to go from Miami to Vancouver, what's the difference. As long as you don't play back-to-backs, who cares what time you got to the hotel.

We're paying these guys good money. Let them suck it up and open the playoffs with an Anaheim-Ottawa series, as long as you can end it with a Chicago-Los Angeles series.

I want my brackets to read 1-seed, through 16-seed, just like 1981!

  69. Top Pool Stars (another Look)

While the point totals are obviously the key to the pool - the 3 stars/drains award leaders:

Most time in the stars: Lundqvist and Quick (10)
Most times as a goat: McDonagh (9), then Lundqvist and Quick (8)

    Best net Star awards:

    Gaborik - 7 stars, 0 goats
Next Closest: Rask, Price net 4 Stars (7 Stars each, 3 Goats Each)

    Most total awards:

    Lundvist & Quick (18 - 10S/8G)
    McDonagh (15 - 6/9)
    Zuccarello (11 - 6/5)
    Price (7/3)
    Rask (7/3)
    St. Louis (5/5)
    Doughty (4/6)

Not sure this is that interesting or simply a waste of my time... now it's posted

  70. I was certain that McDonagh's sheer number of bad games was going to finally lead to the end of people overrating him so much, but then the media seemed to latch onto him in the Finals as if to appear to be giving equal time to him and Doughty.

They had been pumping up Doughty so much that the media felt the need to over-compensate and say, "Hey, McDonagh's just as good."

Then Girardi had a few bad games, and McDonagh's reputation was as the Rangers' best blueliner was secure. But I say fuck that - McDonagh is only as good as Rangers' fans insisted Del Zotto was, a couple of years ago.

    Suck it, Rangers fans.

  71. Congrats to Barrymore and Westfield for dominating this pool. Your prize winnings are in the mail.

And congrats to Guru Jr for almost landing on the podium - I only beat you because I had Jonathan Quick in round one.

  72. And most importantly, all six of us are standing up on the bench, tapping our sticks on the boards for the monumental effort displayed by Westfield during these past two months.

As if it wasn't enough to provide us with daily updates to the leaderboards, Westfield also supplied daily recaps of the Stars n' Goats - that's over 60 mini-articles in addition to the main work of updating the pool data!

I would have probably provided 3 or 4 scoreboard updates and at most 20 or 30 "mini-articles" about stupid shit, like Brett Hedican's Asian girlfriend, or the time I rode a pogo stick to the Cleveland Barons / Habs series, but Westfield provided some actual value-added.

My only regret is that I was unable to generate as much traffic to this blog as it deserved. There should have been 185 comments by now.

  73. The updates were not as timely as the STP pool deserves....but it was fun and if anyone has ideas about tweaks to make next year's playoff pool even better - post them here...

    ReplyDelete
  74. Some ideas...

    1. Players that are added in the waiver rounds have their scores enhanced, say players added after Round 1 get a 133% scoring for their points going forward, after Round 2 - 200% scoring and in the Stanley Cup - 400% scoring

The thought is it allows them to equate their possible remaining rounds with having 4 full rounds. And, since nobody picked them, they are probably the unsung players - particularly as you get into the finals.

Idea 2 - Points for having the Conn Smythe winner (kind of a wild card maybe a 16 point bonus - a point for each victory on the way to the Cup...)

Idea 3 - Add a second round of waivers for the Stanley Cup Finals to incorporate more players into the game and increase the juice for the finals...

I anticipate the ensuing discussion will probably get us to 195 comments (or maybe 85..)

  75. I like idea #3 the best, since it takes little extra effort. The first idea sounds like too much work, but the second idea is simple enough.

Pencil me in for another Bracketeering pool next year. That took no effort at all to produce.
